Looking to Update Your Master Bathroom?

The Master Bathroom

The master bath is just as much of a retreat as the master suite, and if you don’t have small children, it can be a place of peace and solitude as well.

As you are creating this “master retreat” it is a good idea first to determine who will be using it and design it accordingly.  Usually, two people will use a master bathroom, and you will need to design it for co-use. That simply means that both of you will be able to use it at the same time.

The efficiency of the master bathroom is just as important as its comfort. Here are some tips to help you plan a functional and gorgeous bathroom.

Master Bathroom - Focal Point | Taft Built - Renovation and Custom HomesMaster Bathroom - Shower Details | Taft Built - Renovation and Custom HomesMaster Bathroom - Wow Shower | Taft Built - Renovation and Custom HomesMaster Bathroom - Cabinetry and Storage | Taft Built - Renovation and Custom Homes

The Focal Point

It’s imperative when you’re designing your master bathroom to determine the focal point. Due to its size, a soaking tub is a perfect focal point for most master bathrooms. It’s large enough to accommodate two people and can be the centerpiece of a restored master bathroom. This soaking tub can be freestanding or a jetted tub. Whichever style or use fits your family best.

The “Wow Factor”

How do you create that WOW effect? For a room to take your breath away every time you step into it, what would it take?

A luxurious rain shower and bathtub might do the trick, but what really completes it is stacked stone walls. Even though the color is neutral, the feel is earthy. Who would not want this shower?! I’m WOWED just writing this!!

The Shower

Next on the WOW list is just how many flexible design options are available when it comes to open showers. These designs continue to inspire families wanting to remodel a master bathroom. A shower shared by multiple people can really benefit from some upgraded amenities. Even if you’re not sharing a shower, these upgrades can help increase the value of your house. Now, that helps everyone out!!

Shower Amenities

  • Shower benches
  • Programmable Thermostatic valves
  • Handheld showerhead and slide bars
  • Sauna or steam shower
  • Customized shower sprays/body sprays

Heated Flooring

Anyone who knows me knows I’m a HUGE fan heated flooring in the bathroom. When old man winter tries to keep you in bed, radiant floor heating can provide a burst of comfort under your feet. It removes the chill from a cold tile floor as you make your way across the bathroom, and it brings a touch of luxury into your home. Nuheat radiant floor heating systems combine this great feeling of comfort with your home’s heating system in innovative ways – making sure you get the most out of your experience.

Cabinetry

A lot of thought was put into finding the right cabinetry for your kitchen, so do the same for your bathroom! Think about what kind of function you want your vanity to have and what kind of things you will need to store (hair dryer, flat-iron, curling iron, make-up, face towels). Then, furnish the doors and drawers with solutions to enhance the function of your bathroom. A full vanity can have clothing storage and even a laundry hamper built right inside. There are so many options for creating the perfect vanity to meet the needs of your family.

Those Little Extra Touches

  1. Go the extra mile by adding a towel warmer to your master bathroom. This little extra will add luxury to your master bathroom. After all, wouldn’t you want to get out of your luxury shower and have a warm towel waiting?
  2. Accent tile is another perfect way to create a focal point in your bathroom. A sweet touch to your bathroom is tiling the ceiling. Not only is it practical, but it’s beautiful as well.
  3. Lighting from above can cast shadows that make shaving or applying makeup a challenge. Try a mix of natural light and overhead lighting to decrease shadows.
  4. A privacy toilet in a shared bathroom is a must-have. Adding a pocket door with frosted glass will let light in while keeping the space private. If space is an issue, try using a half-wall to conceal the toilet.

What’s The Master Bedroom Suite Really All About?

Bedroom Suite - Laundry | Taft Built - Renovation and Custom HomesBedroom Suite - Windows | Taft Built - Renovation and Custom HomesMaster Bedroom Suite - Closet | Taft Built - Renovation and Custom HomesBedroom Suite - Fireplace | Taft Built - Renovation and Custom Homes

The Master Suite

The master bedroom is generally the most spacious bedroom in the house, but adding the word “suite” to it adds a whole new meaning.  It implies that the bedroom space is more of a retreat than just a bedroom.

Key Features…

What are the key features that make a master bedroom a “suite”? I’m so glad you asked! Usually, they include more than just the essential amenities. Of course, it is entirely up to you to determine what they are. Every family is different and has different needs. A family with small children would design a master suite entirely different than a family with grown kids. However your needs may differ, there are a few standard amenities that will turn your master bedroom into a suite.

1. Walk-In Closet

The first critical component of a master suite is the walk-in or walk-through closet with built-in cabinets or built-in storage units. While closets are a must-have for master bedroom design, the walk-in closet is a very practical addition to any home and an essential division when it comes to organization and giving all of your “treasures” a place.

2. Floor to Ceiling Windows

Large floor-to-ceiling windows for natural light will also give your room a more substantial feel to it. This is especially a must if you have a beautiful view outside. You have to take advantage of the view as much as possible! It can be so calming and relaxing to sit and let the stress of the day fade away.

3. The Laundry Room

Another luxurious addition is a laundry area in the master bedroom suite or adjoined to the suite. How convenient not to have to carry loads of laundry up and down stairs!!

4. Fireplace

Although a fireplace is not a “standard” amenity to making your master bedroom a suite, it is a luxury I can not leave off the list. If adding a fireplace is something you can do, it will make your master suite feel warm and cozy and will be a beautiful focal point of the room.

5. The Master Bathroom

Moving on to the master bathroom! This is a room in the master suite that I can spend a great deal of time talking about. The master bathroom is a retreat in and of itself and should be created as such. So much of this room depends on your taste and style. A few must haves are:

  • Large walk-in shower (single or double head)
  • Deep soaking tub or jetted tub
  • His and her sinks

You can give this master bathroom an earthy feel with stone tile flooring and stacked stone accent walls — heated stone tile floors add extra warmth.

6. Private Outdoor Access

Complete this master suite with access to the outdoors. It can be a patio or a private access to the rear of the house, allowing you to come and go as you please.

Smart Home Technology

Did you know that any device in your home that uses electricity can be part of your smart home technology upgrade?  Yeah, I didn’t either! You can control all your devices by voice, remote control, tablet or smartphone, and your home devices simply respond. When we’re talking about smart home technology, we’re mostly referring to lighting, home security, home theater, and thermostat regulation.

The devices that are out now are becoming so sophisticated that they can now talk with each other and perform functions automatically.  They can anticipate your every need; for example, the thermostat will turn down your heat in the kitchen when your oven is on, or your refrigerator will set up a grocery list that will connect to your phone. I wanted to take this blog and dig a little deeper into all technology has to offer our homes to make it a safer and more energy efficient place to live.

Get Smart in the Kitchen

Fridge

The kitchen is becoming more high-tech, thanks to appliances from Samsung, Miele, and LG Electronics. Smart refrigerators will allow you to scan your receipt from the grocery store so that it can keep a record of your items, alerting you if your milk is about to expire or when you need to replace something. It can even recommend recipes based on what you have in the fridge. Now, if only it would cook it for you as well!!

Oven

Smart ovens will allow you to control and monitor your oven via your smartphone. It will also connect and communicate with your smart refrigerator, allowing you to share recipes from one to the other. When you pick a recipe, the oven will preheat to the correct temperature.

Smart thermostats

Having a Smart Thermostat will give you the capability to remotely control the temperature in your home via your smartphone or any internet-connected device. This makes programming your thermostat easier and way more convenient, giving you greater control of your heating and cooling.  Not only will you be able to connect instantly to your thermostat,  but your Smart Oven will also be able to communicate with your thermostat.  For example, when your oven turns on it will send a signal to the thermostat to lower the heat in the kitchen area making your house that much more energy efficient.

Get Smart in the Living Room

The living room is generally the most used room of the house next to the kitchen and the heart of the home.  This a great place to start with home self-regulation because one remote can control everything;  TV,  music system, lighting, and security.

In-Home Theatre Systems

Movie night at home has never been so relaxing.  Start the movie, set the mood by lowering the lights, and set the temperature all with a single touch of a button.

Depending on how much money you want to put into your in-home theater, you can get a sweet theater.  About $2 million will get you a private in-home IMAX screening room, decked out with actual movie theater features.  The features include a curved wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling screen, a dual-projection system for 2-D and 3-D formats, and laser-aligned loudspeakers. If you want to throw an extra $40k at your in-home theater, you can have access to movies the day they are released to the public. Thanks to Prima Cinema, movies are downloaded automatically and all with one fingerprint scan.

Smart Home Security

There is nothing more important to me than the safety of my family.  So if there is one thing you update in making your home “smarter,” this is it!! There are automated systems where you can access your security features from your mobile phone or tablet, enabling you to check your alarm (including turning it on or off), lock or unlock any of your doors, and even check the feed from your home camera. You can also program your lights to imitate your usual patterns to appear as if you are home when you’re not!

With a smart home, you could enjoy life a little more and worry a little less.  You will have peace of mind with all with a quick glance at your smartphone or tablet.

Digging Deeper: The Open Floor Plan

Open Kitchen Space

Open Floor Plan - Safety | Taft Built - Renovation and Custom HomesOpen Floor Plan - Spacious | Taft Built - Renovation and Custom HomesOpen Floor Plan - Entertaining | Taft Built - Renovation and Custom HomesOpen Floor Plan - Kitchen Space | Taft Built - Renovation and Custom HomesOpen Floor Plan - Natural Light | Taft Built - Renovation and Custom Homes

I have said this before, and I’m going to say it again: I absolutely love this trend, and it’s the hottest must-have design trend for any new home today!  Open floor plans consist of multiple rooms acting as a single living space. This open floor concept has so many advantages, and if there’s one thing you should do to update your home, this is it!  It’s perfect for anyone who likes to entertain.  The open floor plan eliminates separation, therefore allowing everyone to interact more casually. It brings together eating, relaxing, and entertaining into one space where everyone can join in.   Also, open floor plans allow more light into the home, so it brightens the area up — and that makes everyone happier!

A Little History Lesson

Frank Lloyd Wright was one of the first to design an open-plan kitchen. He is famous for his 1934 Willey House design.  When Frank was creating this home, it was just the beginning of the social reinvention decade for America.   Americans were making a more casual lifestyle for themselves.  However, since then, the jury has still been out on this open kitchen floor plan.  The struggle has been between those who “cook” and those who “host.”  The “cook” generally prefers the kitchen not be seen with all the dirty dishes and whatnot, and the “host” is less concerned by the mess and wants everyone to mingle, including the cook.

Advantages

Natural Light

By opening up the interior walls, this creates more space for sunlight to fill in. However, if you have structural limitations, there are other options. All options allow more sunlight to flood in helping to connect your indoor spaces with the outdoor ones.

  • Add a window
  • Widen an existing window
  • Installing a skylight.

Entertaining

Entertaining has never been more comfortable in a custom home with an open floor plan. You don’t miss a thing while cooking you can still see and mingle with your guests.   Also, an open floor plan will lighten flow from one room to another, as well as help avoid congestion in one area. With an open floor plan, the kitchen tends to be the focal point of the home, because  let’s be honest  that’s where the food is!

Spacious

By opening up space and removing any visual barriers, the interior and exterior spaces appear much more extensive.

Safety

With an open kitchen design, keeping an eye on your kiddos has never been easier, whether you’re cooking in the kitchen, or reading a book on the couch.  The open space allows you to always keep a close eye on the ones you love.

Open Layout Gallery

Disadvantages

There’s a lot of give-and-take when it comes to home remodeling, and open floor plans are no different.  When you are removing walls between rooms, you lose the privacy that you might have enjoyed before. When you’re trying to watch a movie in the living room while someone is blending a smoothie in the kitchen, it can be a little irritating. You also lose more wall space for artwork. But, to be honest, you might be that person who just prefers to keep the kitchen mess in the kitchen.  In that case, the closed layout is the way to go.  Either way, there are endless floor plans to choose from that will fit your style and the needs of your family.

Are you thinking of updating your home?

Let’s take a look at the top 9 home remodeling trends of 2018 and see if we can’t give you some great remodeling ideas.  If your home hasn’t been updated for a while, you’re in for a special surprise. 2018 will be known as the year of home efficiency! Technologies have improved, and many innovations have allowed for more smart technology breakthroughs and more convenience to homeowners. Some of these trends have been evolving in popularity for the last 5 to 10 years, and others are ready to take off.

1. Open Kitchen Space

I absolutely love this trend, and it’s the hottest must-have design trend for any new home today!  This open floor concept has so many advantages, and if there’s one thing you should do to update your home, this is it!  It’s perfect for anyone who likes to entertain.  The open floor plan eliminates separation, therefore allowing everyone to interact more casually. 2. Smart Home Technology

While smart technology is not new for home renovations, 2018 promises to be the year of higher-quality products. More products come equipped with voice control and added safeguards for your home.  You can find anything from smarter DIY home security systems, to smart connected large appliances.  Technology is so cool, isn’t it!?!? The devices that are out now are becoming so sophisticated that they can now talk with each other and perform functions automatically.  They can anticipate your every need; for example, the thermostat will turn down your heat in the kitchen when your oven is on, or your refrigerator will set up a grocery list that will connect to your phone. Awesome!!

3. Turning your Master Bedroom into a Suite

The master bedroom is generally the most substantial bedroom in the house, but adding the word “suite” to it adds a whole new meaning.  It implies that the bedroom space is more of a retreat than just a bedroom.  The key features of a master suite include:

  • Walk-in or walk-through closet with built-in cabinets
  • A fireplace
  • Heated stone tile floors
  • Large floor-to-ceiling windows for natural light
  • Large walk-in shower with moveable jets on the walls
  • Large whirlpool or jetted tub

You can give this master bathroom an earthy feel with stone tile flooring and stacked stone accent walls.

Complete this master suite with private access to the rear of the house.

4. Master Baths

The master bath is just as much of a retreat as the master suite, and if you don’t have small children, it can be a place of peace and solitude as well.  However, did you know that the bathroom is another place in your home where you can improve technology?  Updating your bathroom to a smart bathroom will save on water, make the space more sanitary, and energy efficient. Adding a chromotherapy shower will help improve your mood. Infrared faucets will not only turn on and off with a sensor, but can also be programmed for brushing your teeth. How cool!  Also, new tech-savvy toilets have some incredible features: there are heated seats, a lid that will open and close itself, they can flush themselves, and the best part is they can even clean themselves.  What?!?  To top off energy efficiency, you can also put your lights on a sensor.  They go on when you walk in,  and turn off when you leave.

5. New Basement Escapes

Maybe you have an unfinished basement, but don’t know what to do with that unused space.  I know it can be a challenge to figure out what would work best for your family. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

You can get creative and combine any of the following ideas to make the basement a space the whole family can enjoy.
  • Living room
  • Laundry room
  • Guest room
  • Playroom
  • Wine cellar
  • Wet bar
  • Gym
  • Man cave
  • Home office

6. Attic Bedrooms

Turning your favorite storage space into a usable living area such as an extra bedroom, a master suite, a media room, or a playroom  will take some planning.  However, it is an easy way to add extra living space while avoiding zoning and code restrictions that go along with home additions.  With a little creativity and attention to detail, you can add a cozy new living area to your home.

7. Mud Room

Now, a mud room is a space that every mom needs.  I know I sure do!!  As soon as the kids get home from school, my entryway a heap of jackets, backpacks, and shoes! However, with a small budget, you can change that pig pen into an area of organization and function.

8. Lighting

Lighting is one of those things that is relatively inexpensive to update.  It can give your home a fresh new look without breaking the bank.  A popular trend for 2018 is the LED light and light fixtures.  LED is so efficient and has a longer lifespan than any other bulb.  For a more rustic look, the exposed bulbs are very popular.  They can give you a traditional feel, as well as a modern look. Talk about a win-win! Of course, we can’t forget about smart lighting technology.  This allows you to program lights to turn on and off at a particular time, or to use your smartphone to change the color or just dim them. The options are endless with this update, but your future will be bright!

[dt_fancy_image image_id=”717″]

9. Accessibility

Many older adults still live in the same house where they have raised their children and created countless memories. Would you want to move away from that?  With a few accommodations, older adults can continue to live in the same place and continue making memories for years to come.  While it may not be possible for an older adult to live independently forever, these few changes will make their home safer to live in. It will be possible for them to remain in their own home longer, prolonging the memory-making and saving a substantial amount of money on senior living or assisted living centers.

Why is Quartz a Better Choice For Your Countertops?

Kitchen Top Ideas

What is Quartz?

Kitchen Top IdeasUnlike natural stone countertops, such as granite, marble, sandstone, quartz is engineered stone. What does that even mean?!? First of all, quartz is a blend of stone crystals held together by a polymer resin. This engineered stone is second in hardness only to diamonds. Quartz is so durable that it is ideal for areas that get plenty of use and abuse, like the kitchen!! Quartz comes in a plethora of vibrant colors and styles perfect for your unique style!!

The best part of using quartz, instead of something else, like granite, is just how low maintenance it is. It is sealed for stain protection and it’s already waterproof, so it can be paired with an under-mounted sink. Quartz can survive a massive amount of spills, heat, and much more, without even a scratch or mark. No one would ever be able to tell the amount of abuse and destruction your countertop has encountered!

Which Color Best Suits Your Kitchen or Bathroom?

MSI Stone is Taft Built’s go-to for all of our quartz projects. They have a fantastic gallery, both online and at their warehouse. If you’re not sure which quartz countertop color would best suit your project, MSI has small, medium, and large slab samples for you to take home. Take a look at a few of their amazing countertop selections below.

Is This Too Good To Be True?

It goes without saying that shopping around is in your best interest. Before you make your decision based on price alone, there are a few things you should know. First, quartz is non-porous. That means it is resistant to mold, stain, and mildew, making it a breeze to keep clean, germ-free, and bacteria-free. You should also know that granite is a high-maintenance product, meaning you’ll be continuously working to take care of it. While quartz may cost slightly more in some cases, it also comes with better benefits over the alternative natural stones.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss your countertop options, contact us today!

What is the Difference Between Custom and Semi-Custom Cabinet?

Custom vs. Semi-Custom

Can’t decide?  I totally get it! Let’s take a look at some of your options between semi-custom and custom kitchen cabinets.
Custom made means that your kitchen cabinets are made with certain specifications for you and your kitchen. Both custom and semi-custom cabinets are “built to order.” However, the most significant benefit of going with custom cabinets is that they give you more choices. They can adapt to your unique situation…YOUR space, YOUR style, YOUR needs! Most custom cabinet brands can manufacture more sizes than semi-custom lines can. Custom cabinets are better able to accommodate different design layouts and different appliance sizes.

Just how customized can they get?

First of all, each brand of cabinets varies from one to another. The nature of the machinery and craftsmanship can be completely different. However, in addition to sizes, custom cabinetry is also likely to outperform semi-custom cabinetry in other areas as well. Custom cabinets offer more options, including:

  • Finishes
  • Door Styles
  • Custom Color

When should you choose SEMI-CUSTOM?

Well, semi-custom works great when your existing cabinets are refaced to look brand new, when you’re not changing the layout of your kitchen, or when you’re working with a small budget. If you do not have a space that requires custom sizes, and can find the right offerings within the semi-custom products, you can find many high-quality semi-custom products that suit your needs at a more affordable price. Semi-custom brands offer beautiful looking kitchens, too!!

One common misconception …

One common misconception is that all custom cabinets are of higher quality than semi-custom cabinets. That may not be exactly true. Quality comes from the craftsmanship, the details, and from the finest material and consistency of state-of-the-art manufacturing plants. Don’t be fooled by cheap custom cabinets, for that reason; it is definitely in your best interest to shop around.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss you custom cabinet options, contact us today!

Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring is the Hottest New Flooring Trend

vinyl plank flooring

Flooring needs to work with your lifestyle and the design of your home. It is a very difficult piece to change so it is important to go with trends that will have longevity in the marketplace. Vinyl is being seen as the new “go to” flooring. The new vinyl plank floors offer the visual beauty of a hardwood floor with unparalleled durability.

Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring is Renowned for its High Durability and Scratch-Resistance

The great thing about luxury vinyl plank flooring is that it mimics the colors and species of wood in a way that no one can tell the difference. The realism becomes enhanced thanks to the planks looking scraped or embossed. There really isn’t any other flooring like it, except real wood.

Luxury vinyl plank flooring is built to stand up to the wear and tear of every day life. US Floors manufactures an extremely durable product called CORtec LVP that can withstand the most severe occurrences. The waterproof durability of this flooring makes it an ideal choice to stand up to messy pets, rambunctious kids, or even catastrophic plumbing failures.

Luxury vinyl plank flooring creates more comfortable living spaces. When your bare feet land on it instead of the cold, hard tile or stone, you’ll experience a cozy resilience. Standing long periods in a kitchen or in a basement with porcelain or ceramic tile can be exhausting. Vinyl plank flooring can be installed over a cushy underlayment to provide extra comfort in areas where you must spend long periods standing.

You can also add warmth by installing radiant flooring, which adds to the sustainability advantages.

Your Life is Too Full and Busy to Keep Up With Fussy Floors

If you need a floor that is resistant to bacteria and mold, won’t stain, and can be quickly cleaned with a damp cloth or mop, luxury vinyl plank flooring will be right for you. It will stay beautiful with a broom, vacuum, or mop for decades. There’s no need for resurfacing, re-sanding, or refinishing.

LVP Is By Far The Fastest Growing Flooring Category Today

Luxury and affordability are two reasons for choosing vinyl plank flooring for your next renovation or new home. At Taft Built, we are passionate about providing flooring solutions that meet their design dreams and stand up to real life. LVP flooring delivers true style while handling just about anything life has in store.

Innovative Storage Solutions Make Your Kitchen Awesome!

well-designed kitchen

One of the keys to a well-designed kitchen is not always what you see on the outside. Although the external details will certainly have your family and friends talking, it will be the internal accessories that make you smile day after day. Your kitchen will simply perform better with tray storage, pantry goods, cleaning supplies, kitchen towels, trash and recycling bins.

After all, when it comes to creating a well-designed kitchen, function is important.

Dividers and two-tier divided trays can make the best use of your drawers

“A place for everything and everything in its place.” This quote from Ben Franklin sums up the convenient storage solutions available for your new kitchen. Divided trays, two-tier trays, and drawer partitions allow you to organize your drawers so they are more efficient. Silverware and kitchen utensils are essential tools for every kitchen, and when drawers are organized and neatly divided for each utensil, your entire kitchen will be more streamlined and functional. You can also maximize storage space in your drawers with two-tier divided trays for silverware, utensils, and cutlery. This approach keeps lids organized and accessible. No more struggling with a jumble of clanking pots and pans.

Keeping cutlery blades sharp and in a safe place needs to be a must

Slotted drawer knife holders keep blades sharp, and are a good option for keeping your knives organized. Most chopping blocks have storage space below, and can be removed from the drawer for countertop use. A pull-out knife block next to a sink or a hood is a great place to organize cutlery. Pull-outs take advantage of small kitchen spaces, and can be located next to large countertop spaces, or other areas of your kitchen to maximize efficiency.

Well-stocked collection of spices deserve to be organized

There are countless innovative solutions for spice rack storage; vertical racks that pull out, door-mounted racks, flat storage within drawers, and shallow cabinets to name a few. There are also great solutions with stainless-steel spice jars that are incorporated in a drawer. The end of an island is a great storage solution to hide away your spices. Make sure you choose a location for your spice storage that fits the way you use your kitchen. Function is a crucial part of a well-designed kitchen.

Storage an efficiency of your next kitchen are limitless

Base cabinets are usually deep and provide a lot of storage. Often it’s difficult to get the items we’ve placed near the back. This problem can be solved with roll-out storage solutions. For instance, a pull-out with double bins for trash and recycling is a must in every Kitchen. It’s also crucial to have a location to organize all your pantry goods so they are visible. There are many storage solutions such as pullouts and racks to stockpile your food. For those of us who are coffee or wine connoisseurs, there are many creative options to store or display your collections.
